The working principle of the diaphragm valve

Diaphragm valves use an elastic or plastic diaphragm to control the flow rate through the valve. Diaphragm valves are multi-turn valves, which means that the valve stem must rotate more than 360° in order for the valve to open or close completely. When the valve is activated, the diaphragm moves towards or away from the valve seat, and the amount by which the diaphragm is lifted off the valve seat determines the flow rate. When the diaphragm is closed, its edge presses against the edge of the valve seat, and the rest of the diaphragm deforms to create a tight seal.

There are mainly two types of diaphragm valves: wedge-type diaphragm valves and straight-through/double-port diaphragm valves. Wedge-type diaphragm valves have a protruding ridge in the center of the valve body; the diaphragm presses against this ridge to form a seal. In straight-through/double-port diaphragm valves, the diaphragm seals against the bottom of the valve seat, and there is no ridge that obstructs the flow, so these valves have lower pressure drops.

Diaphragm valves are available in a variety of materials, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Since the valve body and the diaphragm come into contact with the medium, it is essential to understand in detail the material’s resistance to various conditions. The materials used for diaphragm valves include, but are not limited to, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), rubber, and special alloys—materials that ensure that the diaphragm maintains its sealing performance even after long-term use.
