Causes and Analysis of Partial Sticking in Butterfly Valves

The reasons for partial overrun are relatively complex. After ruling out factors such as incorrect operation of the control handle, accidental contact with the butterfly valve relay, and failure to engage the locking pin after the butterfly valve opens, the causes of partial overrun were analyzed and determined as follows.


The wear of the butterfly valve pilot and the four-way valve piston causes the gland packing in the piston chamber to seal improperly, allowing pressure oil to leak from the closing chamber. This results in the piston moving toward the closing side under unbalanced pressure, thereby driving the butterfly plate to turn toward the closed position. When the valve reaches a certain position, the remaining pressure oil takes effect, preventing the butterfly plate from further rotating to the fully closed position.


(2) The failure of the butterfly valve rotating bearing to fully engage caused the valve shaft to deviate from the installation centerline, resulting in a closing torque on the disc. Alternatively, bearing wear or slippage reduced the frictional torque of the butterfly valve, leading to disc deflection toward the closing side during operation due to factors such as pressure oil leakage from the relay or four-way valve or vibration.

(3) The occasional imbalance of water flow generates an unbalanced torque on the valve body, causing the butterfly plate to turn toward the closed side.


(4) The maintenance of the butterfly valve failed to meet the quality standards, primarily due to the rotating shaft not being positioned properly or the central axis being misaligned, resulting in the butterfly valve's inability to maintain a stable state as required.


(5) Improper daily maintenance leaves hidden hazards.


(6) The butterfly plate was not opened to the fully open position, leaving travel space, which posed a risk of partial bypass.
